NEW CABIN FOR MERGANSER

Merganser new cabin 54-year-old Merganser received her first roofed cabin this winter.

Will Frost designed her with a sprayhood in 1948, which she sported until the 70s.

She was then modified to a bass cabin style by Carroll Lowell and his brothers.

But her current owner is a tall man, and the top of the bass cabin windshield cut across his line of sight. He also wanted some protection from the weather during his cruises around Casco Bay. So he hesitantly approached the Lowell Brothers, not sure if he would ruin the looks of this legendary boat by adding a roofed cabin.

But he didn't.
The boat emerged from Even Keel with a sporty, slim cabin of delicate lines and proportions that perfectly match Merganser's antique grace. People on the water seem quite taken with it. "They keep circling around the boat, looking at her - they like [the new cabin] pretty well," said Jamie and Joe Lowell.

Merganser w/ original spray hood Merganser also received some other modifications:
~ Pine deck replaced with douglas fir
~ Cockpit framing replaced
~ The steering linkage (originally from a pre-1950s Ford automobile) was replaced with a Teleflex Capilano steering system.

The new cabin has bright mahogany cabin sides and windshield, with carefully selected, very particular pieces of Honduras mahogany. The shelter roof and cabin top were constructed from high-grade marine plywood w/ ATC Core-Cell foam core and an epoxy finish, to keep the weight down. The sides are high-grade marine plywood.
