54-year-old Merganser received her first roofed cabin this winter.
Will Frost designed her with a sprayhood in 1948, which she sported until the 70s. She was then modified to a bass cabin style by Carroll Lowell and his brothers. But her current owner is a tall man, and the top of the bass cabin windshield cut across his line of sight. He also wanted some protection from the weather during his cruises around Casco Bay. So he hesitantly approached the Lowell Brothers, not sure if he would ruin the looks of this legendary boat by adding a roofed cabin. But he didn't.
The new cabin has bright mahogany cabin sides and windshield, with carefully selected, very particular pieces of Honduras mahogany. The shelter roof and cabin top were constructed from high-grade marine plywood w/ ATC Core-Cell foam core and an epoxy finish, to keep the weight down. The sides are high-grade marine plywood.
